TTS Open Data Notes The Transportation Tomorrow Survey (TTS) is conducted in the Greater Golden Horseshoe (GGH) area of Southern Ontario once every five years. The first TTS started in 1986 collecting a 4.2% sample of households in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). The latest TTS was conducted in 2011 and consisted of a survey of travel patterns from roughly 5% of households across the GGH (approximately 90% of GGH area was included in the survey). Further information on the TTS and the survey area covered can be found at http://dmg.utoronto.ca/transportation-tomorrow-survey The dataset contains TTS summary data for 1986, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006, 2011 and 2016. Each year of the dataset contains different types of questions including (1) Household characteristics such as dwelling type, number of persons, vehicles, licensed drivers, employees, students etc. per household. (2) Person characteristics such as age, possession of driver’s license, type of transit pass held, occupation type, place of work for each person over the age of 11 in each household surveyed. (3) Trip characteristics such as origin and destination, purposes and modes used for all trips reported in the survey. Limitations of the Data: When using this dataset, please note the following limitations: 1. The TTS collected random samples within the survey area using telephone interviews. From each household, one respondent provided all household members’ information including previous weekday travel. As the respondent provided proxy responses on behalf of other household members, there might exist slight differences in trip details between the respondent and the actual trip maker. 2. The sample frame of TTS is public telephone listings. As the use of cell phones instead of land line telephones increases, the TTS has been found to be under-reporting for certain groups of population. 3. All data provided here are aggregated spatially. General Terms: "PD" - The City of Toronto is divided into 16 Planning Districts (PD). Outside of the City of Toronto, planning districts are the same as local municipalities. For PD boundaries for the City of Toronto, please contact Data Management Group (DMG) of the University of Toronto. "WARD" - Local wards within each local municipality. • For more TTS information on the 2011 Wards including ward boundaries, please visit the link http://dmg.utoronto.ca/transportation-tomorrow-survey/tts-reports/2011-tts-summaries-by-ward. • For more TTS information on the 2006 Wards including ward boundaries, please visit the link http://dmg.utoronto.ca/transportation-tomorrow-survey/tts-reports/2006-tts-summaries-by-ward • For more TTS information on the 2001 Wards including ward boundaries, please visit the link http://dmg.utoronto.ca/transportation-tomorrow-survey/tts-reports/2001-tts-summaries-by-ward File Organization: The “TTS_dataset” ZIP file contains different folders named according to the year of TTS conducted such as 1986 TTS, 2011 TTS etc. Each year of TTS folder contains CSV data at the PD level. In addition to PD level, starting from 1996 TTS, CSV data is also available at the WARD level. Across all folders, PD level data uses the “ttsXXXX_mun_YY” file name convention, whereas XXXX indicates the year of TTS conducted YY indicates the municipality name On the other hand, WARD level data uses the “ttsXXXX_ward_YY” file name convention, whereas XXXX indicates the year of TTS survey conducted YY indicates the municipality name Field Descriptions: Column Names are self-explanatory. Except the first column of “Category”, the remaining columns indicate the Region and Municipality names. The first column “Category” provides different classifications of households. Examples of some categories are: • “Total Number of households” – total number of households (including houses, apartments and townhouses) in the Region and in the Municipalities • “Total Number of persons” – total number of persons (including all ages) residing in the Region and in the Municipalities • “Total number of trips made by residents in 24-hour” – total number of trips (by any mode) made within the last 24 hours of interview by the residents of the region and of the municipalities
